PROJECT PORTFOLIO

BOTTLENECK

acrylics & media on fabriano  150 X 140 cm

This Painting is based on an area in Brighton called The London Road, where my studio is situated.  A vibrant shoot of a road which is a bottleneck for everybody travelling in and out of Brighton. It’s the heart of the area which has the Train Station on one side, bringing commuters home and visitors in, and the Level Park on the other, which is the hub for local skateboarders, and the

burgeoning baby populace. In my mind, it’s twinned with an area of Dublin, where I come from. Henry St and its surrounding areas, an inner-city hub of activity.  Both have huge similarities. Vibrant shopping areas, buses

dropping off and picking up to hit the suburbs. A huge diversity of peoples crammed into a small area. Then you take a wrong turn and you’re alone. Graffiti, broken bottles, rubbish, homelessness.

It feeds, it drains. It feeds, it drains…..It’s become my Home from Home.

URBAN WALL  acrylic on fabriano 350 X 150 cm

Urban Wall is a sculptural Paper Work.

Painted flat while against the wall surface and then hung, 2D to 3D, this wall has a breathable energy a daytime streetscape.

It is based on the London Road and reflects the vibrancy of this area.

This section of wall records the sunshine, rain and the unpredictable graffiti that is everywhere.

By using paper, I am referencing the wind-blown detritus which gathers on every corner.

PAINTING IN A BOX  acrylics & media on board with light

This painting in a box is a collection of images and ideas layered and layered over time to represent the stories of its inhabitants. As we peel back and reveal snippets of invisible stories, we get a sense of life revealing itself caught for now in a box.

London Road reminds me of inner city Dublin. A hub of activity.  Vibrant shopping areas, buses, lorries heavy traffic. A diverse community soup of people.

Then you turn down a side street and you are alone. My heart revels with aesthetic joy revealed in the graffiti, torn paper billboards, broken belongings. A field of detritus.

This Painting was my first work based on The London Road in 2016.
It has a certain aesthetic that is still relevant to my work today.
I am drawn to the minutiae, the unremarkable.
I see beauty and energy within which prompts me to explore.
This work is currently in the New England House Cafe, which is just off The London Road.
